Hydrogen Ions (Acidosis)
What is Hydrogen Ions Acidosis?
Acidosis (Hydrogen Ions) is an improper pH level caused by too much acid (lactic acidosis) in the body. Acidosis can be either respiratory or metabolic. To diagnose respiratory acidosis, perform an arterial blood gas evaluation (respiratory acidosis can be prevented by providing adequate ventilation). If the acidosis is metabolic, treatment with sodium bicarbonate is recommended.
What are the Potential Causes of Hydrogen Ions Acidosis?
• Respiratory issues (i.e. lung disease, buildup of carbon dioxide, etc.)
• Metabolic issue (i.e. DKA/AKA, cancer, liver failure, etc.)
What are the Indicators of Hydrogen Ions Acidosis?
• History: Diabetes, Renal Failure, Infection
• Exam: Arterial Blood Gases (ABGs)
What is the Treatment for Hydrogen Ions Acidosis?
• Respiratory: ventilate
• Metabolic: administer sodium bicarbonate
